We are committed to Anti-Racist Cumbria’s aim of ‘tackling and ending racism through action and education to create a forward-thinking and actively anti-racist Cumbria, free from prejudice and systemic inequalities’. 

As a school, we know how important it is to help our children recognise and stand up against injustice. We have already audited our library to ensure our pupils have access to a wider variety of literature including books by black and brown authors, and worked with Year 5 pupils in RE to explore the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved People and its impact on us today. As we continue to refine our curriculum, we are aiming to reframe our learning in History and other topics to include a full and frank account from black and brown perspectives as well as white ones.

Mrs Barber has also shared with staff an award-winning film produced by ARC, with black and brown children from the local area, ‘The Fell we Climb’, about their experiences of growing up in Cumbria. All classes will be using some of the accompanying teaching resources during this school year.
